IX Hispana (The “Spanish Legion”) – was one of the oldest and most feared units in the Roman army. Raised by Pompey in 65 BC, it fought victorious campaigns. Could this mystery unit have been the Legio IX Hispana? The nickname Hispana “stationed in Hispania” is first found during hisspana reign of Augustus and probably originated at that time.
